Just when you think you’re close to mastering a skill, in this case affiliate marketing you meet a group of people that know much more. When all these people are in one room brainstorming and sharing ideas the knowledge becomes invaluable. I’m talking of course about the Affiliate Summit meetup that was hosted at Mimeo’s offices in New York.
In an effort to raise awareness about affiliate marketing, Shawn Collins and Missy Ward along with Jim Kukral as Affiliate Summit ambassador have taken it upon themselves to organize affiliate summit meetups around the country. Deborah Carney and her husband Vinny O’Hare were in charge of organizing the meetup in New York. Jeff Grill of Mimeo gave a presentation and shared some of his ups and downs he has experienced in affiliate marketing both with his company and some of his personal sites. He was most recently upset with the latest round of Google slaps on several of his websites and looked as if a bully had stolen his lunch money.
Needless to say most of the night was spent talking about how to optimize webpages to rank higher on Google. Deborah and Vinny had the most helpful information and gave ideas of how to navigate around the Google maze. I think that by the end of the night everyone walked out of the room feeling a lot smarter and with a couple new friends. Deb and Vinny combined have countless years in the affiliate marketing industry and produce several podcasts to help affiliates, merchants and bloggers get started for themselves.
If your interested in affiliate marketing I highly recommend you check out the Affiliate Summit Meetup schedule and see if one is coming to a city near you. If there isn’t one scheduled yet, organize one. When affiliate marketers get together in an intimate setting like these meetups provide everyone seems to find answers to questions they’ve been struggling over for a really long time.
Below are a couple pictures of the meetup:

It was a lot of fun last night. Glad we did this meetup and glad people took something from it. I have the feeling we could have sat there all night the way everyone was taking SEO notes. 🙂
Looks like it was a great event!
It really was! Vinny and Deb pinpointed exactly what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong. I have so many updates I want to work on my own blog as a result from last nights meeting.
Thanks for the great review. We didn’t know what to expect and the crowd was a nice mix of people. Hopefully folks will come back to future meetups and will utilize the Affiliate Summit Forum to keep up with each other and learn even more.
The great thing is that I think we got a message or IM or comment from pretty much everyone that attended! We were glad that everyone got something to take away. I haven’t been able to answer all the emails today, will do tomorrow though!
I didn’t give a good review to be nice Deb. I gave it because the content provided was very helpful! It reinforces what I’ve read on blogs from venture capitalists like Fred Wilson http://www.avc.com/. He talks about great companies really don’t need any marketing, because people that use them will evangelize them for you. In this case, if affiliate marketers are willing to share information with other affiliate marketers these affiliate summit meetups can be an awesome platform to share ideas!
